I posted these letters in the local Facebook group and a lovely fellow sent me this reply:

“Hello Rik, I work for openreach and I my old team put that pole up. We were disbanded not long after we completed that work. I now manage the contractors that undertake poling work, so I will issue them an estimate to complete the works. You can call me Tuesday if you want and we can sort… (number supplied) your letter made me smile, you can keep the old pole for carving 😅 sorry we made a mess of this. We’ll get it sorted.”

Well, it seems I’ve discovered how to get things done in 2026.

    As a lifelong GPO engineer responsible for Network Planning (incl. telegraph poles) Harry would have been highly amused by your dilemma, but not surprised by the tongue-in-cheek “Civil Service” response from the guys at the privatised legacy team!

        Don’t go holding your breath. My instincts as “daughter of GPO Executive Officer” tell me that they’ve responded to your request and that the paperwork is now in file thirteen

    Two posts are better than one. If you can’t carve it into some kind of totem perhaps you can paint it in some kind of colourful addition to the Town Beautification Scheme?

      Apparently, although it was the Facebook post rather than the letter which worked. Anything is better than negotiating the circular online complaints maze.
