Devon Cows 2 by Debbie Edwards (oil on board, 2025)
Last August we booked a week, just two of us, in a modern flat in Hope Cove, on the south Devon coast. Not the prettiest building, but comfortable and well appointed with beautiful sea views, just a few steps from the south west coast path, and five minutes walk from the village shops, pubs and cafés.
One warm evening after dinner on the balcony, the sun was going down over the sea. We piled the washing up in the sink and headed out for a stroll north along the coast path. We spent some time watching a kestrel hovering above the cliffs, and walked on as the sun set.

Below us the waves were pounding against the rocks, but Debbie turned her gaze inland, her attention caught by a picturesque herd of cows peacefully grazing. She spent some time photographing them from different vantage points. She thought it would make a good painting.

And it did. After we came home she painted the scene in oils. And when I see that picture I remember our little stroll after dinner.
