I still grade myself as completely amateur at these, though I did get moderately good at the Guardian one some years back and got to know the compiler. I have books. I have trained. But to achieve more than five Times clues in one crossword now just leaves me ecstatic.
I’m afraid the article – published in 1981 – is completely fraudulent, I’ve never in my life completed the ‘Times’ crossword. It was commissioned because I’d had a couple of anagram/crossword solving dictionaries published.
Ha ha! Completely fraudulent but professionally carried out! Did you miss your true calling? You could have bought an atlas and been an accomplished travel writer!!!
